The rapid rise of snails

Meat for Lent. It wasn´t until the 19th century that the snail, for years associated with Lent (Catholics appreciated it because it is neither meat nor fish), started to win back its prestige thanks to an unknown gourmet who, in 1814, made it fashionable among bons viveurs [1] and dinner guests of the nobility such as Alexander I. People spoke of [2] the Tsar as a consummate devourer of snails, capable of single-handedly [3] wolfing down two kilos in one sitting. The hunger of the following years transformed it back into a dish for the poor, on the menu for the most underprivileged classes. An anonymous verse depicts the hardship of the period: "Distant memories, beneath the gentle rain of a cool night... With wet feet, tired legs, slimy hands and buckets nice and full... We were the ones who hunted for snails".

  [1] "Bons viveurs". En inglés, muchas palabras relacionadas con la gastronomía que usamos de manera habitual son de origen francés. Por ejemplo, "Bon appetit!" (¡qué aproveche!), "gourmet" (sibarita), "chef" (un chef)... Será que nuestras costumbres culinarias no supieron imponerse en su día, o ¿tendrá algo que ver con los normandos? [2] "People spoke of" (se hablaba de...). Es otra forma inglesa de traducir la pasiva. Por ejemplo, la pregunta "¿qué se come en Roma?" se convierte en inglés en "What do people eat in Rome?". Y un recordatorio: no olvides que "la gente" en inglés es un concepto plural. [3] "Single-handedly" (él solo/en solitario). Un adverbio precioso, más enfático que su sinónimo "by himself". Por ejemplo: "She climbed to the summit of Everest single-handedly" (ella llegó a la cumbre del Everest en solitario).
