Our top eight forests - Nuestros ocho mejores bosques
The first answers to come out of their mouths left no room for doubt. Magazine´s attempt to locate and pin down [1] Spain´s best forests was set to be an arduous task. The people we consulted, 10 experts deemed the best in their field for their knowledge and professional responsibilities, gave warning from the very start that it wasn´t going to be an easy thing to do. No wonder,[2] because with over 50 kinds of forest with a single dominant tree species, to which we should add the varieties within that species (thus making a total perhaps over twice as high) and an infinite number of mixed forests (composed of different plant species) it´s tough to choose which ones are the best. Right off, we should say that it´s impossible to know how many forests we actually have. The truth is that since the Middle Ages, a time when farming chores and the Spanish navy´s need for lumber laid siege [3] to the mythical Iberian forests, our land has proved rich in these ecosystems.
